Dan began playing the guitar as far back as 1975 in Hamburg, Germany. After returning to the east coast in the fall of 1976, he began his formal training on the guitar by taking lessons with a student of one of the unknown great jazz guitarists of our time, Link Chamberlin. The lessons learned in Lou's Music in Startford Connecticut layed the foundation for Dan's pursuit of jazz and rock as well as classical, flamenco and all the other styles that have been an inspiration over the years. Returning home to San Diego in the summer of 1979 led Dan to continue his pursuit of music and the guitar by attending Southwestern JC in preapration for UCSD - all the while studying music as a major and beginning to learn the classical guitar.
Dan auditioned to be the studnet of Celin Romero in the fall of 1981after only playing the classical guitar for several months - and was accepted to be one of the students in the young guitar program at UCSD that included guitarists Scott Tennant of LAGQ and Alex Dunn, professor at University of Victoria. Thus began a relationship with Celin that lasts to this day. During the years of classcial guitar study, Dan was tutored by Pepe and Celedonio, the father and founder of the famed Los Romeros Guitar Quartet.
After receiving a B.A in Music frrom USCD, he received
his Master of Music in guitar performance from California State University,
San Diego, in 1992 all along studying with Celin, Celedonio and Pepe Romero. During this time, Dan studied jazz with JImmy Cheatham, jazz guitar with Peter Sprague, Joe Diorio, Steve Kahn, Howard Mogan and the late Ted Greene. Dan's interest in the music of Phil Keaggy led him to learn a folk type style of solo, instrumental guitar that was played on the steel string guitar. This style used altered tunings as well as a right hand fingerpicking similar to classical guitar.
All these stylistic pursuits taught him how to learn directly from the recordings of these many guitarists. This led directly to Dan being hired to write songbooks for some of the leading publishers in the publishing business, such as MelBay, WB as well as various guitar magazines.
Dans passion for the guitar has led him to teach the instrrument since 1981. He currently
teaches at MiraCosta College and is available for private lessons at his
music studio in Cardiff. He teaches all styles of music from the beginner to
advanced levels.
